CranioSacral Therapy

Here are the three important things that I’d really like you to know:

  1. CranioSacral Therapy can be really beneficial for everybody, because it helps you to tap in to your mind, body and soul, in short, your whole being. It can help you get in touch with pain, with tension and anxieties; you can understand your melancholy and your joy, and through CranioSacral therapy you can deepen connection with every part of yourself.

  2. We live in harsh times. There is always too much information and too many demands. There are pressures at work, the demands of managing family care, and friends who want to talk about their stress. You want to do the best you can for everyone who needs you. But how do you take care of your own needs? Who is helping you to nurture your own best health and happiness?

  3. Your body is speaking to you every moment through signals of ache, pain or restriction, through sensation of pleasure, through releasing tension in muscles and tissues, and through the thoughts and emotions that are a constant inner story.

In a CranioSacral therapy session you can take time to hear the conversation your body is having with you.

Spending time in the presence of yourself gives you the chance to open up to your body’s deep needs, to listen with all your senses to your body’s talk, and then decide how you want to respond. Your body can guide you to make those wise choices.

SO, WHAT HAPPENS IN A CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY SESSION?

In CranioSacral therapy we are observing through light touch the craniosacral rhythm, which is the third rhythm of the body after heartbeat and breathing. You lie fully clothed on a soft couch and the therapist uses a light touch, holding different parts of your body, maybe your neck, or your head, shoulder or a leg, and then waits patiently. And then:

  • mechanoreceptors in your skin respond to the light touch

  • your body tissues begin to unwind the release their restrictions

  • your central nervous system interprets this as calming

In CranioSacral therapy we invite you to talk about what you are noticing happening in your body. And if we choose to pay attention to a particular part, for example, your gut and the organs of digestion, you might gain some insight into, say, a painful bowel condition.

And CranioSacral therapy can be surprising -

  • where we touch can have an impact on distant parts of your body

  • holding your belly might trigger activity and thoughts in your brain

During a CranioSacral therapy session you can talk or you might prefer to remain quiet. The choice always rests with you. And each session will be different. In Upledger CranioSacral therapy a particular type of conversation between the therapist and client can lead to somato-emotional release. This is the release of perhaps long-held emotions from your body either through movement, laughter, tears or silence.

It is always the case that this only happens when your body’s inner wisdom knows that the time for this is right for you.

Releasing tension and coming to self-realisation

Open yourself to your body’s deep needs and learn that there are other ways of knowing aside from the active, thinking mind. Mind is great. But it doesn’t have all the answers. The wisdom of the body and the wisdom of the natural world are great guides when we learn to be in relationship with them.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Bernadette has a phenomenal natural skill as a therapist. I have been lucky enough to work with her, receiving treatment, for many years. She has a lightness of touch, an effortless kindness and intuitive nature which instantly puts me at ease. She is warm, open and a patient practitioner adept at working with all kinds of people, including me and my complex trauma and learning difference with sensitivity and calm peacefulness. I’ve made gains in one CranioSacral session that had taken months and months of talking therapies to unpack.

I highly recommend Bernadette as a CranioSacral Therapist, particularly if you have, like me, Neurodiversity, experienced trauma and need a trusted, safe space to gain support for barriers that are preventing you from being your best you.
